Sock HopOne School, One Book

What are the benefits?

The benefits of reading aloud are remarkable. Studies have shown that reading to children helps them to listen better and longer, to build bigger vocabularies, to understand concepts better, to feel positive about both books and learning – and much more.

When an entire school reads the same book, the buzz and excitement around the book augments these benefits. Reading a book together brings the added joy of building and expanding a sense of community among students, parents, teachers, and staff – and beyond.

Studies have shown that bringing families together through literature can be a strong bond to help connect parents to their children's schooling by a single book. We know that many parents want to help at home. One of the best ways to help is by reading aloud. With One Book One School, our school can come together to read one chapter book at the same time.

HERE WE GO!!!!!

INTRODUCING-

Kate DiCamillo’s The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane!!!

On January 11th the youngest child of each family should have brought this book home with them.

Please read it at home over the 4 week period of January 22nd-February 15th (there is an all school reading schedule below!).  This book is a gift from the Munhall PTO.

Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares your children to be effective readers.
But it is also a fun, worth while family activity. The One School, One Book program, aims to
build a community of readers at our school.

HOW COOL IS THIS?

EVERYONE- students, parents, teachers, even administrative staff - will be participating, and we can all reap the many benefits. This means as our Munhall kids go through out the day they can engage in discussions with almost anyone they interact with at school!

How it works:

Generally, you will be asked to read 1-2 chapters a night – about 15 minutes per night. Also included in the schedule are dates for special Friday treats and an end of event picnic dinner at the school!

One School, One Book is a novel (get it ..."novel" ;)) program in that children at all grade levels will all be listening to and reading the same book. Strange or daring as that may seem, it actually makes sound educational sense.

Reading professionals recommend reading material out loud that is beyond a child’s own reading
level. And we also believe that you can and should continue reading chapter books with your older
children, even when they are able to read by themselves. We have selected a title that can be
followed and understood and enjoyed by younger students, but that will still captivate and stimulate
older children. You will want to make sure your family keeps up, so your child can be included.

Throughout the month, everyone will be talking about "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane"!

One quick note regarding the content of The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane: We chose this
book because of its broad appeal to a wide range of ages, abilities and interests as well as its
messages about kindness, compassion, and resilience. We wanted you to be aware that chapter 17
contains a reference to alcohol. Chapter 19 deals with the death of one of the main characters.
Please preview these chapters and address it as you see fit through discussion.

Good luck! “When a whole school reads a book, there’s a lot to talk about.” With your help, we
can build a Community of Readers at our school.
